Con una enorme sobriedad formal, el joven realizador alemán Marc Rothemund -38 años, hijo de director de cine, ganador del Oso de Plata al mejor director en Berlín 2005- ha trasladado a la pantalla un suceso histórico: en 1943, dos estudiantes universitarios, los hermanos Hans y Sophie Scholl, de profundas convicciones cristianas, fueron detenidos por la Gestapo mientras repartían octavillas en la universidad. Ambos pertenecían a la “Rosa Blanca”, un movimiento de resistencia que, sin recurrir a la violencia, luchó por informar a los alemanes sobre las mentiras malignas del régimen nazi. La película se centra en los seis últimos días de la vida de Sophie.
Rothemund ha sido consciente de que la fuerza de la película estaba en el personaje, y ha dedicado sus esfuerzos a documentar bien lo que cuenta (para ello ha accedido a numerosos testigos de la época y a la transcripción de los interrogatorios), a profundizar en los conflictos de los protagonistas y a seleccionar un buen reparto capaz de plasmar estos intensos conflictos en la pantalla.

Comenzó en 1975 trabajando como fotógrafo en documentales, cortos publicitarios y largometrajes.Se ocupó de la fotografía de “Ciudad de Dios” (2001), de Fernando Meirelles, por la que fue nominado a un Oscar, y en 2003 volvió a trabajar con Meirelles en “El jardinero fiel”.
