Good enough camera
I bought this camera for my 17 year-old son who is quite tech savvy (compared to myself). I've read the previous reviews about "grainy" pics, but once you figure out how the make adjustments the pictures come out just fine. It takes good pictures, has a decent enough zoom lense, and allows him to edit photos on the camera. It has a lot of other options to that he seems to be quite happy about. He carries it to school daily and is always taking pictures of friends and such and they upload directly to his computer via a USB cable. He doesn't use the camera box since he carries the camera around like his cell phone, and he gave the crayons to his 3 year-old sister. Two gifts in one! LOL. The camera is very easy to use and I'd recommend it for someone just starting out using ditigal cameras, or someone in HS or junior high who takes daily random shots of a bunch of other teens/friends.not a great camera
I bought this camera from qvc. It was a today special value for around $130. I was looking for a camera with a good optical zoom since most of the cameras sold in store are usually 3x. When I recieved the camera I was content with my perchase. I thought it was weird that instead of a regular sized xd card it came with a macro xd card which would fit into an xd adapter. A month or two after using the camera with no real problems, I stopped into a Target store to print out some pictures. When I attempted to put the adapter card into the slot to view and pick out pictures, it wouldnt fit. I went home and tried to put the card into my laptop... it wouldnt fit. The adapter card does not fit into anything else except this camera. I called olympus to see if I just had a deformed adapter. The women told me that no, this was how the card was made. When I asked her if many other people had called about this problem she told me that yes, they have gotten calls for the same problem and the best they could do is send me a new adapter, which is the same as the old one, and won't fit into anything other than this camera. I understand that there are ways to print out pictures from the computer and order them from online photo sites, however, this is the most bisarre thing I have heard. I have always been able to print out pictures from stores like target and walmart and prefer to print out pictures that way. If I had known of this "feature" in the beginning I would have sent the camera back right away. After using the camera more after this incident I became more frustrated with my perchase. The zoom, which is why I bought the camera in the first place, is very blurry. Also, when the batteries die in this camera, there is no "low battery" warning. The camera shuts off. With no warning. When I went onto qvcs website to put on a review, the page for this camera had been taken down. Obviously other customers were not happy with their purchase and the camera was taken off the website. I gues its true that you get what you pay for. I will not be purchasing another olympus camera!So, Bob, how do we sell this thing?There I was sitting in the office trying to think about how we were going to sell these Olympus FE-46 cameras. I mean they're a nice camera for the price and all, but there isn't much to make it really stand out in the low end of cameras.So I went down to Bob's office--that guy in marketing who does a pretty good job selling out stuff. I said, "Hey Bob, how do we sell these things?" He asked me which one this one was. I replied, "It's the under $100 one all the nice features."He replied, "oh, the one we make the customer either buy xd memory or more expensive micro-sd cards for?" "yeah, but it has 12mp and a cool 5x optical zoom", I retorted."Well if you could take decent pictures at any other time than high noon in a land where time stands still, those would be nice features", he snorted.Now I think he was making fun of the fact that it's easy to get blurry grainy pictures from the camera, but you're not going to get optical image stabilization or a really good lense at this price (yeah, you get digital image stabilization, but don't let that fool you). I tried to think of a come back, but before I could he continued: "There's just nothing to make it stand out in a crowd. The features don't sound any different than anyone else. And it looks right out of 1995--and for me, 1995 wasn't a year I want memories from."Frustrated, I resorted to name-calling, "Ok, Mr. Smarty-Pants, how do we sell this thing then???"He answered, "It's all about perceived value. Let's throw in a storage box that costs us all of a dollar. Then we'll throw in a case, which (with the current slave labor conversion factor) also costs us about a dollar.""Hmm," I said, "That doesn't sound bad, but why would you buy a box with a camera?""It doesn't matter," he answered, "They add perceived value. In fact, let's throw in a box of crayons and 6 months of free coloring book prints!"I got a little scared as I saw costs addings up. "Slow down buddy, can we really afford to include that?", I asked."Don't worry," he replied. "The prints are ones you print on your computer. Not only that, but they normally come free with a 64 pack of crayons!!! It's perceived value at its best! And your camera will come up when people search for 64 crayons."Wow, that Bob in marketing is either a genius, or an idiot. But, I'll try anything once. So here's your camera, box, case, and crayons. Worthy Successor to Tivo Series 2This is finally a worthy successor to the Tivo Series 2. While there have been 2 previous HD Tivos before, their relative cost and the lack of available options for lifetime subscription made them unattractive financially compared with the cable company DVR. If you purchase directly from Tivo, there is a (...) lifetime subscription option to those with a previous lifetime subscription. That makes this a worthwhile deal, even if it takes about 30+ months to break even.If you've not used a Tivo before, I would say it is head and shoulders above Comcast's ugly, ill-conceived interface. If you've used Verizon, it will be a step up, but not nearly so dramatic. If you've used Tivo before, you'll feel right at home. It's basically the 8 year old Tivo interface that's been spiced up here and there, with supporting links to Netflix & Blockbuster for streaming movies.This Tivo requires an M-Series cable card if you're not recording from an antenna. If you're not sure, call your cable company to see if they support it. Verizon did struggle with this question, although eventually I found someone to confirm the Verizon cable card supports multi-stream. However, the Verizon tech they sent was helpful and had the job complete in about 15 minutes.Although the Tivo supports resolutions up to 1080P, it is only available at 1080p/24, so if you have a slightly older set that only supports 1080p/60, you'll have to drop back to 1080i. That isn't spelled out anywhere on Tivo's site, although it probably doesn't make much of a difference.This Tivo networks nicely with older Tivo's allowing you to transfer video between them, although it's not possible to transfer from an HD Tivo to a SD Tivo, although the reverse works nicely. You can also use the Tivo Desktop (a free download) to transfer to your PC. You can even save it to watch later or on your portable (Google "kmttg tivo").I won't write a review of the Tivo interface. More people have done it better than I could, so Google for reviews. You should know, although the new menus are in high definition, once you get away from the primary menus, it drops back to the old 480/SD menus. The only reason I can tell is the screen on the TV flips a bit until it resyncs with the lower resolution.This version of the Tivo has a backlit remote, although by default that isn't turned on. It also supports separate volume and muting with an A/V receiver, although it doesn't give you the ability to turn it on with your remote. My A/V receiver did not work with the codes provided, but a chat with Tivo pointed me to a page on their support site where you'll find the new Tivo has a "learning" remote. That did the trick.If you use Tivo's Chat support, the agents are well-informed and patient.I've had one brief incident as I messed around with various menus where the HDMI lost sound sync with the TV. A quick resync through the A/V receiver got me back and running in a few seconds. Time will tell if that was a one-time glitch or a problem. Previous Tivos have worked with Amazon video on demand (which works reasonably well). Now there are additional options to select high-def material, and you also have options to download from Blockbuster and Netflix. Keep in mind there is a charge for this type of on-demand movie, similar to what you'd expect from your cable company. However, this function is integrated beautifully into the overall search function. As an example, let's say you're interested in a program such as "Chuck". As you search for the program, not only will it find the upcoming episodes on TV, but will also present you with the complete episode guide, giving you the options to either record from cable/antenna, or for shows that aren't available you can download them to your Tivo to watch. That's very clever and convenient.Overall, it's an expensive purchase, but Tivo does their best not to make you feel stupid for buying it.Works flawlessly as adverstisedAfter reading the negative review related to the need for a CableCard, I had to respond with how the product actually operates. I found the Company's literature to be very straightforward in explaining what was required to operate the unit. The whole process worked really well for me. I had preordered the Premiere XL and it arrived on Monday, upon which I called Verizon for a CableCard. They arrived Tuesday morning and it took 10 minutes to install the card and download all the channel data. Done. Painless and works flawless. Verizon Fios folks currently charge a few bucks a month for the CableCard and did not charge me for the Tech to come over for the install.The TiVo itself works great, exactly as outlined in the literature. The menus and search features are far easier to use for my family than any of the other company DVR's I've used in the past. I do miss the Verizon on-demand, but being able to access my Netflix online, plus the other options from Amazon and Blockbuster makes up for it. Have already used free software available on the internet to transfer shows on the TiVo to my Mac, PC, and iPhone. Takes awhile to perform the transfer, but it's many GB's of data. Love the auto-backlit remote and the onscreen menu's are very slick. Great purchase, very happy with the unit so far. When activating with TiVo I did purchase the 3 year warranty, but the cost was offset by the Amazon On-Demand credit received when purchasing from Amazon.Should note the unit does not have wireless capability, so if you don't have the ability to plug the unit directly into an Ethernet port, make sure you get the wireless-N accessory when purchasing.The Optical audio out port has stopped working. TiVo is replacing my unit and making it easy, but it is a little annoying that a unit less than 30 days old has this type of malfunction. Changing my rating down to 4-stars as a result.First Impressions, having had all generations of TIVOFirst point, I purchased this direct from TIVO as I had a special lifetime service offer. I have purchased the series one, two, three, and now this S4 box. Without question, the boxes are becoming less and less capable. The LED displays are dumber and still no wireless built in. TIVO has gone completely no frills eliminating things such as the clock, and much to my disappointment eliminating the switch button on the remote that allows you control two TIVO's in the same room independently. I was able to solve this by using the old remote (the new box can still be set to respond to a particular remote control ID).I have had the box for a week now. I obtained a new M-Card ahead of time, and had it authorized over the phone with Comcast tech support. A few days later the card started losing channels. I'm not sure if this was a TIVO issue or not. I called to have the cable card re-initialized and it has been stable since then.I've never wanted to give TIVO less than a million stars. This one gets 4 because it needs a lot more work. First, the new "HD Menu" system is clunky and really seems like it needs to evolve though it has potential. More importantly, I've had the TIVO box hang on me several times while navigating. Looking at the forums, it appears this is due to major bugs in the new GUI. The box gives you the option to use the old GUI, and I switched to that and the box no longer hangs. This will get sorted out in time. One thing I think is very useless in the HD GUI is the ability to see what's playing on one of your tuners in the upper corner of the screen. In the short time I've been making adjustments to the programming, I've caught the end of a show I've been recording and spotted inadvertently who is getting voted off etc. Luckily you can disable this feature in the settings menu. The hard drives and the box itself are nice and quiet. The fans rarely run. It's nice to get this kind of capacity internal to the box. These are some early impressions. I can't really comment on speed as the new box is mostly empty of programming and the old box was fast until it was loaded with to do recordings and so on. I would recommend the box at this time, but not with the same enthusiasm I had for prior generations.

SAME GREAT TOMTOM NAME BUT NO REASON TO UPGRADE
Here is the latest in TomTom technology. The TomTom 130. This latest development from TomTom will be perfect for first time GPS buyers who are looking for something simple, compact, and accurate. For previous owners of the TomTom One however, this is no reason to upgrade. The product itself is as close to perfection as I've seen in a basic GPS device, hence the five star rating, but then again so is the TomTom One 3rd edition that was released late last year. The TomTom 130 model is basically the TomTom One with a few minor upgrades. The most notable would be the new flip and fold mounting capability. Instead of the standard suction cup mount that TomTom owners are used to owning as a separate component (one that slides in and out of the back custom grooves of the TomTom itself) there is now an attached mount that folds into the unit for easy storage. This is convenient but in my opinion and like the other minor upgrades, no reason to toss out your old TomTom One in exchange.iPod has set the standard for a lot of electronic thresholds, none being more noticeable than the size and depth of its products. To some it up...slim is in and the TomTom 130 is even slimmer than its big brother the TomTom One weighing in at a 6.1 ounces and only 1 inch in depth. I really liked this GPS at first, esp. the ability to download updates, pictures and even voices all for free. However the speaker quality was very poor, tinny, and hard to hear, even after I made adjustments in the menu.I called Tom Tom, hoping that I had a bad unit and it could be swapped for one with better speaker quality, they said, unfortunately, due to the compact design, all the speakers in that line are the same quality. Reluctantly I returned it. Amazon has a great return policy.I then bought a Garmin Nuvi 350, and wow, the speaker quality is much better.Love my TomTomI recently bought the Magellan Maestro 3225 and, after 5 days, returned it because it was really user unfriendly. I then got the TomTom for the same price and I love it! So many more features than the other one. One thing I love is that it gives you a choice of route and background colors so that you can decide what color scheme works best for you. Also, gives you several choices of voices to choose from, which is nice. The British one is so polite! HA HA! I would highly recommend this device, and at $150, it's a good deal. One thing -- I highly recommend downloading the Mr. T voice ... There's nothing better than to be told to make a left up here, fool! I pity you!

Great CalculatorBefore I bought a TI-89 Titanium, I had used a TI-83 Plus for four years. After taking calculus and learning about limits, derivatives, integrals, infinite series, Taylor series, differential equations, and multivariable functions, I decided that I would look for a calculator which was capable of symbolic computation. After analyzing my options, I decided on a TI-89 Titanium. The TI-89 Titanium is able to expand polynomials, factor polynomials, and do all of the calculus techniques that I mentioned -- symbolically and numerically. One of the other things I found helpful was the TI-89 Titanium's ability to plot direction fields using different algorithms (including Euler's method). One of the nicer things about this model (compared to the TI-89) is that it has USB connectivity (cord included) for installing applications and transferring data. Another nice thing is that it also supports connectivity to older model TI-89s via the old I/O port which is right next to the USB connector. I also found the "exact mode" very useful (exact mode will give you exact answers rather than decimal approximations). Yet, the most useful feature of this calculator is probably the "pretty print" feature which displays expressions as you would normally write them on paper. This feature allows you to easily see the expression that you typed in. All these features plus copy and paste ability make this calculator nearly perfect. My only complaint is that the cover does not initially slide on and off easily. However, I'm sure that with more use it will wear in. Overall this is a great calculator -- I recommend itFor calculus and beyond, perfect! Anything below calculus, this is too much!After using a TI-83 Plus calculator for the last 5 years, I decided to upgrade to the TI-89 Titanium. This calculator is unbelievable in its features and power. First of all, it is more suited for advanced math, such as calculus and beyond. This calculator is NOT meant for high schoolers who are taking algebra, geometry or trig classes. If you don't know what a derivative or an integral is, then save your money and buy a TI-84 instead. (Besides, I believe most high school math teachers ban the TI-89 on tests) This calculator can also run programs in its Flash memory, which can be downloaded from the TI website. A USB cable is included standard. TI has made the newly designed sliding cover much more secure than the old TI design (TI-83 plus, TI-86, TI-89 regular), whose sliding cover was not very secure and became looser over continued use. The cover is very hard to get off the first few times (I was almost afraid of breaking it off), but over time it has gotten easier. Switching over from the TI-83, the only problem I've encountered is the operation of this calculator is very different from the 83. The menus are different, the interface different, different buttons. It takes a while to get used to.Powerful, so powerfulThis is the most powerful scientific calculator in its class.If you're majoring in Engineering, or plan to major it, then you must get this one (or regular Ti-89)If you buy anything else for cheaper price, you'll have to spend $150 more to get this later anyway. (like me)However if your Math class will end up in Calculus or Algebra(i.e. if you're not going to learn Diff. equation or harder), you don't really need this, you will just waste extra $70 for the features that you will never use (or features that aren't allowed to use in exam)So think logically. It's really cool looking calculator and it got best software/hardware in the world.But if one is going to use it for simple graphic or solving polynomial equations, then it's really like simulating windows and playing Doom3 on NEC Earth Simulator..Used Ti-83 will do as good for those..
